What He Didn’t Know

I had a boy once
who called me “angel” and “star”.
Little did he know
I’m the iron tang of blood
and the salt of tear-water.

But the salt in me
and the iron tang of blood
loved the boy for that;
so I kept the words with me,
though I let go of the boy.

(Words are always true,
even when those who speak them
lie and do not know.)
